There is no public universal AI ranking formula
“Local search AI ranking factors” is a convenient label, but it can suggest more certainty than the evidence supports. Different search and answer experiences use different processes, and their full selection systems are not public. An observed association is not proof that one edit caused a recommendation.
Use three categories in your audit: published platform guidance, observations from your own defined tests and reasonable tasks that improve customer information. Each can inform the work, but they should not be reported as the same kind of evidence.
For example, a correct telephone number is a practical necessity even if you cannot quantify its effect on AI mentions. A competitor’s repeated appearance is a useful observation, but does not reveal the model’s private weighting system.
Priority one: make the business unambiguous
Check the name, services, actual locations or service areas, contact route and opening information. A customer should not need to reconcile conflicting versions of the business across several pages.
Describe which location provides which service. Keep emergency availability, appointment requirements and specialist claims accurate. For a business that visits customers, explain coverage honestly rather than inventing an office in every target town.
Maintain important profiles and directories as part of the same routine. Use Profile Manager and the directory resource to support that work.
Priority two: answer the suitability question
A service page should help a person decide whether to enquire. Explain the work included, relevant exclusions, pricing or quotation factors, the process and what happens next. A list of category words is not a useful substitute.
Review location pages for genuine differences. Keep important information in readable text and use helpful images as support. Avoid publishing a large collection of near-identical pages simply to cover every wording variation.
Priority three: support what you say
Give customers evidence they can assess. Use genuine reviews, accurate qualifications and approved case studies with enough context to understand the work. Do not extrapolate one successful case into a universal promise.
Relevant independent sources can clarify who the business is and what it does. Inspect important professional registers, specialist directories and local coverage. Check their accuracy and relevance before treating the number of listings as a meaningful target.
Review replies are useful customer communication. Do not present reply frequency, a particular phrase or a photo-upload schedule as a proven universal AI-ranking coefficient.
Priority four: check access and page integrity
Confirm that important pages work, are intentionally indexable, use the correct canonical and have useful internal links. Investigate hosting/security restrictions that prevent public access. Preserve deliberate exclusions on private or test content.
Use structured data to describe accurate visible facts. Validate it and keep it current. The goal is truthful page information, not an invented schema type that claims to unlock AI recommendations.
These checks are part of maintaining a usable website. They do not remove the need for a relevant service or prove that a system will select the business.
Priority five: measure a defined local task
Choose a small set of realistic non-brand service-and-place questions. Record the exact wording, engine/mode, date and locality settings. Note named businesses and linked sources separately.
Repeat the checks and retain a change log. If you edit the service page, change the prompt and switch the tested location on the same day, the result cannot tell you which change mattered. For multiple branches, keep location observations separate before summarising the brand.
| Evidence | Useful interpretation | Overclaim to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| A platform publishes an access requirement. | Check whether your important pages meet it. | Meeting it guarantees a recommendation. |
| A source appears repeatedly in your question set. | Inspect that source and the information it contains. | That source is a universal ranking factor. |
| A business is named after several changes. | Record the outcome and repeat the observation. | One particular edit caused the result. |
| Enquiries increase. | Investigate attribution, demand and the wider customer journey. | Every extra enquiry came from AI discovery. |
The AI Visibility Audit and manual checklist should help create a clearer action plan. Judge the plan by the evidence behind each finding and the usefulness of the next task.
